#3 Experimental Clock

Description

Interpreting clock in my own way was an intriguing assignment. Making a clock that is personal to me, I wanted to represent my take on time, so my piece doesn't depict time literally, but attempts to show my mindset around it. Time given to me feels very absolute. Eventhough it keeps going on, there's a limit to my own time, and it moves fast. Many instances, within my timeframe, I try to plan everything out, but when I do so, the outcome doesn't meet my expectations. So I've come to embrace the unexpected surprise that occurs within the spontaneity of time.

Design Process

My very first sketch was inspired by my #2 assignment, with the illustrative look. I've simplied the visual from heart to a circle to focus on the sense of speed, movement of a sphere (ball). I then became focused on the trailing that happens over time, indicating marks of the past. With velocity applied, in seemingly random yet systematic motion, the additive circles created beautiful graphic patterns. Playing along this idea of patterning with time, I organized my 3rd sketch into a grid-form of clocks. Taking these ideas, I developed frameless clocks in 6 x 6 grid system. Moving in varying seconds, the hands move freely, yet finding moments when they appear to create meaningful patterns.

Reflection

This project was so far the most difficult one. I had hard time trying to express visually my idea of a clock, so I was hindered by my level of coding. What I'd like to emphasize if I may improve this project is the beautiful pattern moments that are intentional while the second hands dance in a randomized way.
